This year (all 31 days so far) has already flown by! I can’t believe that it’s been just over a year since we kicked off the Centennial Celebration with the “human 100” picture (I recall that it was a very cold day!).
It’s been a while since I last blogged on the intranet so I’ll take a moment to recap some highlights of the last quarter of 2007. As you all know, a new city council was elected with former Mayor Pro Tem Loomis being selected by his peers to serve as mayor for the next two years. Also, we graduated the first class of the East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program and held a farewell event for former mayor, Sam Singh. We wish him well in his travels!
Of course, we concluded an exciting year of Centennial activities and I’d like to thank city staff in every department for making it a resounding success. You’ve really set the standard for quality services. Along those lines, I participated in several very informative “Coffee with the Manager” meetings at the DPW, Fire Station 2, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant and our discussions included emergency access to the northern tier while construction is underway, building security and economic development. I am also pleased to report that, in response to concerns expressed during these coffee conversations a few years ago, the city is about to rollout a plan for affordable medical coverage for permanent part time employees. Our Health Care Task Force endorsed this plan.
Lastly, Sally Schepis and Jodi Kimble planned yet another enjoyable holiday luncheon during which outstanding service awards were given, an a group of very deserving, longtime employees were recognized for their dedication to the city. It was a great way to end 2007 and to kick off what will be a busy 2008. Thanks again to everyone for all you do everyday to make East Lansing a great community.
