As many of you know, the City of East Lansing initiated its successful Emerging Leaders Program (ELELP) in the fall of 2007. To date, approximately half of the 22 graduates have been appointed to one of the city’s 20+ sanctioned boards and commissions. All of the 2007 program graduates reported a very positive experience with the program. In addition to serving on boards and commissions, the 2007 ELELP graduates have served on committees and one is working to establish a pocket park in her neighborhood.

ELELP has been especially important to me as I had the opportunity to initiate a similar program in Dayton, Ohio where I was previously employed. I am proud of the fact that our city is able to offer a program such as this to residents who want to make the leap into public service, assume leadership roles in their neighborhoods or simply want to learn more about our community.

The ELELP Planning Team is currently finalizing details for the ten-week, 2008 program that will begin on September 10 with an opening reception at MSU’s Cowles House. I am pleased to share that President Lou Anna K. Simon has graciously offered for the second time to host this kickoff event that provides participants the opportunity to get to know one another.
So who is eligible to participate? Any resident of East Lansing 18 or older who is not currently running for, or serving in an elected office. Applications will be accepted through August 3 and can be obtained by contacting Marie McKenna at mmckenn@cityofeastlansing.com.
