For more than four years, downtown East Lansing and its visitors have enjoyed the addition of an alternative art space known as (SCENE) Metrospace. The space has become a cherished venue for many in our community who have come to appreciate the alternative expressions of art, local musical acts and unique, thought-provoking exhibits showcased within its walls.

With that being said, (SCENE) did not become what it is today without the hard work of its past artistic coordinators and directors. These individuals have put their heart and soul into this unique project, viewing their contribution to the space as more of a labor of love than just another hard day's work. One such director, Peter Richards, recently departed from his position at (SCENE).

Peter is a graduate of Michigan State University and a talented artist, who has spent the last two years creating exhibits and coordinating shows at (SCENE). His artistic vision has attracted an audience of art lovers, young and old alike, to downtown East Lansing in appreciation of local and national artistic talent. Peter has not only conceptualized and curated the bi-monthly exhibits at (SCENE), but has also rolled up his sleeves to paint walls, design posters and even serve as the building manager at times. His tireless work has not gone unnoticed and I would like to personally thank him for putting (SCENE) Metrospace on the map as both a gallery for local and national artists and a regional destination for audiences of all ages.

Peter's departure has made way for a new artistic director at the space, Tim Lane. He will pick up where Peter left off and I am confident (SCENE) will be in good hands with Tim at the helm.

I encourage the entire community to join me in welcoming Tim to his new position by catching (SCENE)'s upcoming show, "Together," which will be showcased Oct. 24-Dec. 14. Coming up even sooner than that is a poster sale on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 4-7 p.m. (SCENE) is located next to Georgio's Pizza in downtown East Lansing's colorful parking ramp.

I hope to see everyone at the sale and newest exhibit over the coming months....you might even catch my wife and two young boys soaking in the arts and cultural scene in downtown while you're there.
